Being an "Access Champion" is so much more than what you do, it's why you do it and who you can help along the way. I've always believed this, and it's why I have been involved in philanthropy and community-based programs for people with disabilities for the past twenty years. Not only have I been able to contribute to these programs, but I've also had the great fortune of being a recipient. I was born with Cerebral Palsy, but thanks to the fortitude and perspectives of my parents, that has never served as a barrier in my life.

I was introduced to sports at an early age; swimming since I was a baby, which lead me to join a provincial swim club. I started horseback riding when I was 3 and a half, at the Pacific Riding for the Disabled in Langley and competed until I was 16 years old. Later, I joined the Track and Field team and participated in wheelchair events 50, 100, 200 Track plus Shot Put and Club Throw. I seemed to excel at sports quite quickly which allowed me the phenomenal opportunity to compete in the BC Games for Athletes with Disabilities since 1994, earning 22 Gold, 10 Silver and 2 Bronze Medals in various sporting events.

Aside from physical activity, I also feel it's important to advocate for the things you believe in. I feel blessed to use my voice everyday to represent myself and the issues I care about. I first started speaking in front of large audiences at the age of 10; it was then I realized the impact that words can have. Since then, I've been involved with a number of organizations (including Easter Seals/The Lions Society of BC, The Sunshine Foundation, The Active Living Alliance, and The United Way) as a spokesperson, helping to spread advocacy for persons with disabilities across Canada, and proving that anything is possible when you invest the right kind of energy and creativity. Because of this, I started my own business as an Inspirational Speaker, which has given me the privilege to speak on stage at events across North America including: TEDxStanleyPark and The Duke Of Edinburgh Awards. In August of 2013, I received the honour of being recognized for my work in improving business practices, while contributing to the betterment of society and was named “Entrepreneur of the Year” by the Self-Employment and Entrepreneur Development Society. I have made a ton of lifelong connections and have helped to build brands such as Reality Controls and Hunky Haulers. As an advocate of disability related issues, I most recently started working with the Rick Hansen Foundation as Marketing and Community Manager on an accessibility review website and initiative called "Planat."

Every day I am inspired by the people I meet. The people I look up to the most and consider mentors are my father, Rick Hansen and Michael J. Fox.

I am passionate about outdoor accessibility because I really believe everyone should access the outdoors as much as possible. We have such amazing technology today to allow people to get outdoors no matter what challenges they face; it just takes people who are willing to help and inspire others to get out there! Spending time outdoors and particularly in the ocean reminds me I am a part of nature. It clears my head, gives me exercise and allows me to experience the magic of the world. I have Dyspraxia which affects my ability to balance and coordinate my movements so surfing was the perfect thing for me. It allowed me to practice balancing in a beautiful environment and when I fell off it didn’t hurt! I feel I have largely overcome my own disability and had amazing fun doing it! I want others to be able to do the same. Most things in life are made of waves, we have to ride the waves whether we want to or not so we should learn to do it with style and grace.

My mission is to make surfing as accessible as possible to disabled people through teamwork, coaching techniques, adapted equipment and having loads of fun in the ocean! Specific missions at the moment are attending the world adapted Adapted surfing championships and creating a Welsh adapted surfing team. I am also working on creating more adapted surfing equipment.

Volunteering at a surfing event for children with autism spectrum conditions seeing how great it was and feeling that regular surfing opportunities were needed. Also the death of my best friend made me want to live life to the fullest.

Jon Pimlott

Hello from Nanaimo British Columbia Canada. My name is Jon Pimlott and this is my story of the little row boat that could (a wheelchair accessible rowboat). When I had the idea of this while rowing on the lake I knew instantly that it would work. The biggest smile came to me as I envisioned this exact end result. I met this Canadian who told me anything is possible so I took his words and proceeded to try to be the change I wanted to see in the world. The process of designing these concepts has affected me in such a profound way. I live on a little lake in Nanaimo called Diver Lake. It has an accessible fishing float on the edge of the lake. This is the where I was inspired to create my accessible watercraft concepts. My Youtube video is called Universal rowboat and it is featured below. It is one of my proudest moments as I watched a father take his daughter fishing in my rowboat. I dream of seeing my rowboat concepts all over the world. To be recognized by Access revolution is quite an honour for me.

I was excited. To be able to get on this board for the first time ever not ever thinking I ever have a chance like that. It absolutely means the world to me. I’m a water baby and I love being out on the water. My favourite part is just being out on the water, being free. I had no confidence being on the water before going on this board. I am a lot happier in my life now.

Access Revolution has opened the doors to having access to the outdoors that I never thought possible, from paddle boarding, to hiking, and off-road wheeling with the freedom chair in environments my day chairmanwould never take me, has enriched my life in ways no one could ever imagine. There is no greater feeling when you feel like world is spinning out of control, then having the access to hop on a paddle board and take a moment to yourself to recollect your thoughts and emotions. Access Revolution makes this possible.
